Newly Elected Lawmaker Has Arrest Warrant

I was interviewed by Sara Goldenberg with ABC 15 News with regards to newly elected Arizona lawmaker Ceci Velasquez.  ABC 15 discovered that Ms. Velazquez has an arrest warrant out of Pinal County due to unpaid fines for driving on a suspended license.

I explained that Article 4, Part 2, Section 6 of the Arizona Constitution states that Arizona legislators are immune from arrest on misdemeanors during the legislative session and for the 15 days prior to the start of the legislative session.  I further explained that Ms. Velasquez could be arrested right now because she had not yet been sworn in and the legislative session does not start until January.

I also stated that this is the type of problem that Ms. Velasquez could probably solve by writing a check to the court for the amount that she owed.
